Sar-El, the National Project for Volunteers for Israel was formed in the spring of 1983. "Sar-El" was founded as a non-profit, non-political organization. Its goals were to contribute to Jewish continuity, create a cultural and educational exchange between the diaspora and Israel, and partner with all supporters of Israel in a mutually beneficial experience.
Sar-El achieves its goals by encouraging volunteers from around the world to come to Israel for a number of weeks where they will experience working in an I.D.F. warehouse or base.
Harvey Naiman, a real estate lawyer practicing in Toronto, did participate in this volunteer program and spent two weeks in the summer of 2012, working on an I.D.F. base. This was a most enjoyable experience, bonding with the other volunteers as well as the soldiers completing their regular army service on the base. Harvey Naiman highly recommends this program to any individual looking to go beyond the usual capacity of tourist. Harvey Naiman is a firm believer that this program is a wonderful way to both enjoy Israel and contribute to the country in a meaningful way.
